Crater Lake National Park is located in southern Oregon. It is the sixth oldest National Park in the country and is a giant crater which is the remains of a destroyed volcano. The lake is the deepest lake in the country at 1,949 feet and the ninth deepest in the world. The violent climactic eruptions and the subsequent collapse of Mt. Mazama were responsible for the depth of the crater that holds the lake. Crater Lake is unusual as it has no water bodies flowing into or out of it. All the water that enters is lost due to evaporation or seepage.

The lake is an amazing and pristine blue and lies glittering in the sun and the water in the summer is great for a dip. Direct precipitation in the form of snow and rain keeps the water level intact. There are many interesting activities that a visitor in Ashland can do. An interesting history

Ashland is in Jackson County and is only about 12 miles South East of Medford and around 230 miles South of Portland. This Oregon city is located conveniently in the Medford-Ashland metropolitan area. The history of Ashland is rather interesting as the original settlers here were the Shasta Indians. Later it became a kind of highway town where the hunters and trappers from the Hudson Bay Company stopped over while passing through the area in the 1820s. It was named Ashland Mills only in 1855 after Ashland County in Ohio.

Southern Oregon University formerly called The Ashland Academy was established here on November 4, 1872. In December 1887 the first railroad entered Ashland and soon it became a bustling township. It has now become a very popular tourist destination with people flocking in from all over the country to watch their Oregon Shakespeare Festival. It has many other attractions as well and one of them is the old and quaint Hersey House with its own fascinating history.

Hersey House through the ages

Built in 1904 this charming property was bought by James and Carrie Hersey in 1916 and their family lived there for decades till it was sold in 1974 when it was restored and converted into a bed & breakfast in 1983.
